3 May 2019 - Annual Mason State Bank 5K Race |
3 May 2019 - Commercial Bank Mason 5K Race Last year was my 9th consecutive participation in this 5K race. I was looking forward to making it ten in a row, but fate intervened and a fall in the street during a late night training walk knocked me out of the race. I had been walking over 20,000 steps a day to build up my stamina and it seemed to be working. I was walking over 3,000 steps late at night just before going to bed and was walking the streets at a fair pace. Two nights in a row I became fatigued and stumbed. The first time I landed on the grass next to the street. The second time I landed hard on the street surface. This photo shows my injuries. For the time being I am out of the 5K race business. My doctor said future falls could be dangerous, especially since I take a strong blood thinner daily. Perhaps when I go off of the strong blood thinner I can consider resuming my efforts. But the doctor also pointed out that at my age (just turned 77) I should accept that I'm getting too old for this activity. However, perhaps I can take some nice photos of the event using my regular camera equipment instead of using an iPhone 6+, as in previous recent years. Following are a selection of photos of the race. It was a chilly day and the participants should be congratulated for braving the cold conditions. There was a good turnout along with a large number of spectators. I've tried to provide a taste of the activities below. I was able to capture photos of the top three finishers. It is surprising how quickly the top runners were able to finish. Place mouse over photos below to see a larger version |
